Darkest Autumn

By Audrey M. Roy Greenfeld, Daniel Roy Greenfeld

Vetch is sixteen, a squire of Ambria, and he has a secret: he is afraid of battle. He would rather brush down his horse, Blue, and fill a basket with blackberries than draw a sword, and he has never told his two best friends how badly his hands shake before a fight.

Then the bell of Ravenna rings out of turn. The Dark Lord's army is in the streets, and Vetch rides down the mountain with his cousin Gilder and his friend Dunn to defend the town.

Vetch kills his first man on the gatehouse roof. By the time he climbs back down, the boy who left his basket in the blackberry brambles is gone, and the war is only starting.

The Dark Lord commands monsters, siege towers, and an army that Ambria's knights cannot match. Ambria has mountain walls, a handful of mages who keep their plans to themselves, and Vetch.

He has a soft heart and a talent for climbing. He will need both to keep the people he loves alive.

Book one of the Ambria series.
